Acknowledge. Educate. Take Action. - Mother Mother

Hi, this is Jodi, founder of Mother Mother. Just a few years ago, I believed that I was so far removed from racism simply because “I’m a nice person”. I did not understand my role in institutional racism: the systematic distribution of resources, power and opportunity in our society to the benefit of people who are white and the exclusion of people of color.

Acknowledging my privilege was the first step in my journey. Then came (continuing) education. Taking anti-racism courses (specifically Spiritual Activism by Rachel Ricketts), reading articles and books written by Black folx, and following people who don’t look like me on social media. Finally, supporting BIPOC by taking action with my time and money.

Three years later, I’m still learning, and I'm still uncomfortable. I think the deeper you dive into anti-racism work, the more uncomfortable you feel — which is nothing compared to what I imagine Black folx have felt their entire lives.

So if you are a white person outraged by systemic racism, please…

Acknowledge

👉🏻 Acknowledge your privilege.
👉🏻 Be aware of your implicit bias.

Educate

👉🏻 Read articles and books written by Black authors. “So You Want to Talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluois and "Me and White Supremacy" by Layla Saad are a great start
👉🏻 Check out https://www.rachelricketts.com/resources for a thoughtful list of anti-racism resources
👉🏻 Follow BIPOC on social media (is your feed filled with people who look like you?)

Take Action

👉🏻 Uplift BIPOC by donating your time and/or money
👉🏻 Talk to your friends and family and call out racist behavior
👉🏻 Buy from BIPOC. Check out https://shophappymango.com/ for everything baby, tot, & mama, and https://blkgrn.com/ for clean makeup, skincare and more.
👉🏻 Talk to your children about racism. https://www.instagram.com/theconsciouskid/ is a great resource
👉🏻 Buy diverse books for your kids. Check out https://www.instagram.com/hereweeread/ for a list
